Jim passed a blank sign-in sheet around and waited until every kid had one. “If you’ve ever thought you could do anything, what would it be?” His eyes roamed the seven teenage boys sitting cross-legged in his living room.

A hand shot up. “Dennis?”

“I guess I can be a firefighter. If my mom will come home on time so I can leave watching my sister and go for evening tutor lessons.” His head lowered with his voice. “I don’t think that’s going to happen so... maybe a janitor if I could finish high school?”

The boy’s uncertainty grew with each word. Then silence fell across the room.

“Did you pray? For your mom?” Jim rose to his feet, rounded the couch, and came to the other side, squatting beside Dennis. Ruddy hair hid his face, and he refused to look Jim in the eyes. “If you could pray for her to get a better job, maybe think of a few places that could offer her better hours, that might change things up for her. And for you. You never give up on your dream. You change strategies to make it happen.” As he searched the other six, their faces showed they weren’t in the mood to open up their cases for discussion.

Jim straightened and realized their time was far spent, but had been productive. An extra rush of gratitude warmed him as his gaze fell on Roberto. At least, his prayers had been answered, and Roberto could join them. “Okay.” He took in a deep breath. “That wraps it up for today’s fellowship and mentor session. I will be on travel next month, so I’ll communicate to David about when we’ll meet again. That would be our final meeting, fulfilling my role as your mentor. Any questions?”

Roberto shifted. “We will miss you, man. You’re the best mentor we’ve had in years. You taught me a lot about life, making good choices and to be the best that I can be.” The boy’s eyes grew misty. “Thank you.”

Jim nodded, struggling to contain his emotions. To say teaching these boys had been a rewarding year for him too would be an understatement. They taught him to appreciate the opportunities he’d enjoyed as a kid and strive to keep giving back.

He took his place again, sat cross-legged, and extended hands to both boys by his sides. “Let’s pray.” They all joined hands in a seated circle. “Father, we thank You. For this day. For even the air we breathe. And for a chance to come together once again under the canopy of Elliot-Kings Mentorship Program. We thank You for shedding Your light on our hearts through Your Word this past year. We pray the words of hope we shared will yield good fruit in our lives and will make us more like You, God. Let today’s memory Scripture, which admonished us to acknowledge You in all our ways, bring us into the path You have mapped for our lives. We pray that You help Dennis’s mom
